H1N1 influenza A is also commonly known as the swine flu. The swine flu is believed to have originated in Mexico and then quickly started spreading. The swine flu is a dangerous type of flu because it is a new strain. The swine flu is thought to be a combination of bird flu, swine flu and human flu. This particular strain of flu has the potential be become an epidemic in 2009 because people have never before been exposed to it and therefore don’t have any immunity built up against it.
This lack of immunity within the population is what has the makings of a possible epidemic or pandemic in 2009. With this new strain of influenza running around, properly called Type A H1N1 swine influenza, but more popularly known as the swine flu, I think it would be nice to give people the 411 on the latest medical emergency that’s got the world’s attention.
Swine influenza came from pigs, hence the name, and pigs usually have regular outbreaks of this disease. The problem with it this time is that this strain of influenza has managed to jump the species and went over to us Homo sapiens and cased a bit of havoc.
Pigs don’t have to worry about it because most of them have built-in resistances to the diseases, mostly because of the constant evolutionary exposure to the disease. This vaccine has been rushed to market, so to speak, in order to meet the public and government demand for protection from the swine flu. GlaxoSmithKline says that “clinical trials will be limited” due to government demands and that “additional studies will therefore be required and conducted after the vaccine is made available”. Symptoms of swine flu are similar to those of seasonal flu. These would include very high fever that keeps appearing occasionally, persistent coughing, running or stuffed nose, sore throat, severe body aches, chills, extreme tiredness and fatigue, vomiting, diarrhea that recur more often than they would in the case of seasonal flu.
